Vacation Bible School- July 2010
The First United Methodist Church of Baxter Springs held their annual Vacation Bible School, July 19, 2010 through July 23, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There were a total of 35 youth attending.
The theme this year was Gospel Light’s High Seas Expedition. During these high sea adventures the kids explored the mighty love of God through story time, crafts, music, recreation and snack time. Each night opened with a video clip of that night’s expedition. Through story time the youth learned how God’s Word is true, comforting, surprising, life changing, and for everyone. Their bible lessons for the week where from Acts. First they learned how bad men put Peter in jail. But God promised to take care of Peter, and he sent an angle to help him. The second night they learned how God comforts Paul in a storm at sea. Paul also survives a bite by a poisonous snake on the third night. On the fourth night Peter and John, taught people about Jesus, that Jesus loved us so much that he died on the cross for our forgiveness. The final story was about the early Christian believers living together and sharing everything.
Friday night ended with a program for the parents. The youth sang songs and told their parents what they had learned during Vacation Bible School. During Vacation Bible School money was donated by the youth for Heifer International. Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. By giving families a hand-up, not just a hand-out, they empower them to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope. With gifts of livestock and training, they help families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways. They refer to the animals as “living loans” because in exchange for their livestock and training, families agree to give one of its animal’s offspring to another family in need. It’s called Passing on the Gift – a cornerstone of Heifer’s mission that creates an ever-expanding network of hope and peace. The youth raised $50 as of Friday night and they have chosen to purchase rabbits. After the program there was a reception with lemonade and cookies.
We would like to thank all the children for their participation in Vacation Bible School as well as their parents for allowing them to attend. We are also grateful to all those who donated items or their time to help make our annual Vacation Bible School a success again this year.
